Intel has reportedly started making modem chips for the 2018 iPhone lineup.

According to Nikkei Asian Review, Intel's XMM 7560 modems will be used in some of the upcoming iPhone models. It reiterated an earlier report by Fast Company that Qualcomm will continue to supply modems for some iPhone models this year as Intel is still facing issues with production yields. Intel was previously believed to be the exclusive supplier of modem chips for Apple due to the ongoing legal battle between the iPhone maker and Qualcomm.

The XMM 7560 was unveiled in February 2017 and updated towards the end of the year with CDMA support. As this is the first modem chip to be manufactured in-house by Intel, quality and production issues are not unexpected. Nonetheless, Apple is rumored to be working with Intel on 5G modems and Intel is aiming to take the lead in 5G wireless communications after 2019.
