Intel and Google to Optimize Android Platform for Intel Architecture
Intel and Google announced they will work together to enable and optimize future versions of Android for Intel's family of low power Atom processors.
At the early morning keynote in IDF 2011 (Intel Developer Forum) this morning, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini announced that they are working together with Google to enable and optimize future versions of Android for Intel's family of processors.
This means that the Android operating system will be compiled for the x86 architecture and future versions will be available to support any Intel-based platforms. Currently, most Android smartphones rely on processors based on the ARM architecture.
Devices that will immediately benefit from this announcement include tablets and mobile devices based on Intel's upcoming low power Atom processors, also codenamed Medfield.
Intel also demonstrated an Intel-based tablet running Android Honeycomb as well as a mobile concept phone based on Medfield running Android 2.3 OS.
