The days of changing SIM cards whenever you switch mobile service providers are numbered as two of the biggest phone brands in the world are pushing for a new SIM card standard.

According to the Financial Times, Apple and Samsung are currently in talks with telcos to implement embedded SIM (also known as e-SIM). As an e-SIM contains subscriber identity modules and is built into the phone, consumers are able to switch service providers without getting a new card. In addition, e-SIM will make the SIM card slot obsolete and allows phone makers to design thinner devices.

With e-SIM expected to be ready sometime next year, it is unlikely to see the next Apple iPhones or Samsung Galaxy Note 5 / S6 edge+ coming with this new SIM standard. The GSM Association, which represents mobile operators around the world, reportedly told the Financial Times that "the majority of operators" support the transition to e-SIM.
