Barely six months after launching the Nova 7 SE, Huawei has now unveiled the Nova 8 SE, a 5G midrange handset powered by either the MediaTek Dimensity 720 or 800U SoC.

While the earlier Nova 7 SE came with a 6.5-inch LCD display, the Nova 8 SE has swapped it for an OLED panel (still 2,400 x 1,080 pixels) capable of DCI-P3 colours.

It also sports a quad-lens rear camera system made up of a primary 64MP, f/1.9 shooter; an 8MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide; and a pair of 2MP modules for depth sensing and macro shooting. The selfie camera under the waterdrop notch uses a 16MP sensor.

The 178g, 7.46mm-thin handset also features 66W (11V @ 6A) fast wired charging, which Huawei says lets you top up the phone’s 3,800mAh battery from 3% to 100% in just 35 minutes. For effective heat dissipation, there’s one graphene film sandwiched between the display and main body and another between the body and back cover. The fingerprint sensor is under the display.

The Nova 8 SE comes in two variants, with the standard edition using the Dimensity 720 and the high-end edition sporting the Dimensity 800U. Both are octa-core processors using 2 x Cortex-A76 and 6 x Cortex-A55 cores — the main difference is that the 800U’s twin Cortex-A76 are running at a higher 2.4GHz (vs. 2.0GHz on the 720). Both models feature the Mali-G57 GPU and have 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

Additionally, both Nova 8 SE models are 5G capable and support Dual SIM Dual Standby technology. The key difference is that the model with the Dimensity 800U chip allows both cards to be 5G, whereas only the primary SIM on the standard model supports 5G.

The Huawei Nova 8 SE is now available for pre-order in China. The model with the Dimensity 720 is priced at 2,599 Yuan (~S$532), while the one with Dimensity 800U is going for 2,699 Yuan (~S$552).
