HTC continues to work on the next flagship phone despite the deal with Google

Although Google has acquired HTC's smartphone division, the Taiwanese phone maker will continue to work on its next flagship model.

As part of the US$1.1 billion deal with Google, HTC will send a major portion of its design and engineering team to work on the Pixel lineup. This does not mark the end of the smartphone story for HTC though.

In its own press release, the Taiwanese phone maker states that the deal also supports its own-brand smartphone strategy where there will be "a more streamlined product portfolio". It added that it will continue to have the "best in-class engineering talent" which is currently working on the next flagship phone.

“This agreement is a brilliant next step in our longstanding partnership, enabling Google to supercharge their hardware business while ensuring continued innovation within our HTC smartphone and VIVE virtual reality businesses. We believe HTC is well positioned to maintain our rich legacy of innovation and realize the potential of a new generation of connected products and services". - Cher Wang, Chairman and CEO of HTC

The deal with Google also provides HTC with "greater operational efficiency and financial flexibility", both of which are essential for the Taiwanese company to make a comeback to the smartphone market after many quarters of revenue loss.
