iOS 18.4 is here and apart from adding support for English (Singapore) for Apple Intelligence and giving us the option to change the default apps for more categories, it also brings Visual Intelligence to the older iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.

To recap, Visual Intelligence is a feature that uses the phone’s camera to help users learn more about their surroundings. For example, you could take a photo of a restaurant and use it to check its opening hours or menu; or you could point it at a car you see on the street and ask what model it is and how much it costs. In my opinion, this is currently one of Apple Intelligence’s most helpful features.

To enable Visual Intelligence on your iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, first, ensure your phone is updated to iOS 18.4.

Once updated, there are two ways to invoke Visual Intelligence: the Action Button or the Control Centre.

To assign Visual Intelligence to the Action Button, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go Action Button
  • Swipe until you come to Visual Intelligence

If your Action Button is already assigned to something else that you find more useful, you can also use the Control Centre. Follow these steps:

  • Swipe down from the top-right corner of your phone to bring up the Control Centre
  • Long press on the screen to bring up customisation options
  • Tap “Add a Control” at the bottom of the screen
  • Search for Visual Intelligence in the search bar at the top
  • Tap on the Visual Intelligence button to add it to your Control Centre
