This is how much it costs Apple to make the 256GB iPhone XS Max

Starting at S$1,649 for the 64GB iPhone XS, and going up to an eye-watering S$2,349 for the 512GB iPhone XS Max, Apple's new iPhones are the most expensive iPhones ever.

But how much do they actually cost to make? Techinsights has posted a teardown of the 256GB iPhone XS Max, which is reportedly the most popular model among consumers, showing the actual component cost value that goes into the phone.

In total, the 256GB iPhone XS Max is valued at an estimated US$443(~S$605). Unsurprisingly, the most expensive component is the 6.5-inch OLED display at US$80.50 (~S$110) per panel. This is closely followed by the new Apple A12 Bionic chip and modems, which cost a combined US$72 (~S$98).

Based on this figure, Apple is making S$1,434 for every 256GB iPhone XS Max sold, although obviously, this breakdown doesn't factor in research and development costs, the other accessories you get with the phone, manufacturing costs, packaging costs, and shipping costs. Once you factor those in, the number is more likely to be closer to S$1,000 per phone. Even so, that's a pretty tidy profit and helps to explain what made Apple the world's first trillion dollar company.
