Here’s a way to remap the Google Pixel 2’s Active Edge function
Enter Button Mapper.
The Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL have a function called Active Edge that basically lets you squeeze the phone to fire up Google Assistant or silence incoming calls. It’s a great feature if you use Google’s personal assistant a lot, but not so much if you don’t, especially since there’s no official way to use Active Edge for other functions.
Well, if there’s a will, there’s a way. Or an app.
Button Mapper, an app that lets you remap your phone’s hardware buttons to perform other functions, has just been updated to let you use Active Edge for other things. Like before, the app uses Accessibility Service; and in combination of reading the system logs, it’s able to know when exactly Active Edge is engaged, which it can then proceed to hide Google Assistant before performing the user-defined action. While Button Mapper is available as a paid app, this Active Edge remapping is present in the free version.
Since Active Edge is hardcoded to launch Google Assistant, any non-Google sanctioned method is going to be a hack or workaround. At this point, this is the best option Pixel 2 owners have.
