Tests show big jumps in image quality from iPhone 12 Pro Max's larger sensor if you shoot in RAW
For users who shoot manually and in RAW, the choice is clear.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max's main wide camera has a 47% larger sensor.
One of the iPhone 12 Pro Max's highlight features is the larger sensor of the main wide camera. Apple says it's 47% larger than the main wide camera sensor than the rest of the iPhone 12 range.
But in our tests, we found that the larger sensor didn't necessarily translate to better image quality. Chalk this down to the efficiency and effectiveness of Apple's image processing.
However, Halide, the people behind the eponymous app, found that if you shoot in RAW, the larger sensor can give you incredible jumps in image quality.
Shooting with Halide and in RAW gives users control over shooting parameters like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and more, and it also removes Apple's image processing, allowing photographers to get and see the image as it is.
Shot in this way, the iPhone 12 Pro Max's larger sensor shines and allows users to capture a ton more detail and with considerably less noise.
