The Pixel 3 smartphones are not selling as well as Google had expected.

In an earnings call with investors, chief financial officer Ruth Porat shared that Pixel sales were lesser in the last quarter compared to the same period a year ago. She blamed the poor sales on "some of the recent pressures in th premium smartphone market".

Besides increased competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung, it is likely that the high prices of the Pixel 3 drove down consumer demand. Moreover, phone owners are holding onto their devices for a longer period of time. Google might have saw this coming; it is expected to launch a pair of midrange Pixel phones this month.

Nonetheless, Google's hardware business is growing with nearly $5.5 billion in revenue in Q1 2019. The growth could be due to sales of Chromecast, Google Home speakers and Nest products.
