Google is expected to upgrade the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 9.

A source familiar with the matter told Android Authority that Google plans to use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 9.

The source claims the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is the same one used on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. That would be the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 sensor, which felt snappy during our review of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

This would be one of the biggest upgrades of the Pixel 9 since Google has been using an optical fingerprint reader since the Pixel 6 in 2021. The implementation of the optical fingerprint reader did not go as well as the company had expected.

There were complaints of it being sluggish and unreliable, which Google tried to attribute to the "enhanced security algorithms" which needed more time to verify fingerprints and required "more direct contact".

Google is holding a Pixel hardware event on 13 August to announce the Pixel 9 lineup.
