Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes to Singapore

Google has officially announced the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, its second book-style foldable smartphone. And here’s the exciting bit: it’s officially coming to Singapore!

Before we go into its local availability details, here’s the low-down on what Google offers through this handset.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Like its mainline Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes with the company’s latest mobile processor, Google Tensor G4. The processor enables Google's core AI features, as well as its graphics and computing capabilities, such as photo editing and general browsing.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has two displays, as with typical book-style foldable handsets. The outer 6.3-inch Actua display has the same panel size as the Pixel 9 Pro’s. The inside is an 8-inch Super Actua Flex display, one of the largest on the market and 80% brighter than its predecessor.

Unique features of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold include a Split Screen for multitasking on apps, support for photos’ drag-and-drop, and a dual-screen mode for the Google Meet videoconferencing app (to show participants your face and what you’re facing).

Google said it has also worked with various entertainment and game app developers to optimise content and interaction. For example, Tabletop Mode (folding into an L-shape) works on titles like Asphalt Unite and Disney Speedstorm, while games like Minecraft and Candy Crush Soda Saga have “a more immersive experience”. Other titles, like NBA Infinite and League Of Legends: Wild Rift will be supported “later this year”.

Google AI features, all included

Google’s slate of AI features available on the other Pixel 9 series devices is also coming to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Features included at launch are Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, Circle To Search, Summarise, and its AI assistant, Gemini. You’re also getting older (yet still excellent) features like Magic Editor, Best Take, and Video Boost, alongside new AI features like Add Me and Pro Controls.

Cameras that support foldable formats

The phone boasts triple rear cameras: a 48MP main camera, 10.5MP ultra-wide, and 10.8MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. The cameras are further supported by multi-zone Laser Detection Autofocus (LDAF).

These cameras support classic foldable features for photography, like Dual Screen Preview (viewfinder preview on both displays), Tabletop Mode (L-shape hands-free shooting), and Rear Camera selfie (outer display acting as selfie viewfinder).

A new photo-taking feature is Made You Look, where the outer secondary display plays a little animation to get the attention of a baby or pet while taking their picture.

Other camera features include support for Macro Focus, and both front cameras (located on both folded and unfolded displays) now support Face Unlock.

Everything else

Google also ensured that the device could withstand regular use. It’s IPX8-rated against water (1.5m submersion, up to 30 minutes) and uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch resistance.

The upgraded  “fluid-friction” metal hinge is said to “open fully flat with a satisfying snap”. The hinge is steel, but it's covered in aluminium alloy.

Finally, Google also said it’s one of the thinnest book-style foldable phones in the market, measuring just 10.5mm when folded (though the thinnest of all is from Honor). For reference, the slimmed-down Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is 12.1mm when folded, and the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold is both lighter and thinner than its predecessor.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is available in Singapore in Obsidian from S$2,399 onwards (Porcelain colourway is not available here). Both 256GB and 512GB (at S$2,579) configurations are available for pre-order in Singapore. 

Pre-orders begin on 14 August 2024. You can sign up to keep tabs or book your foldable through the local online Google Store here. Pre-ordering can be done via Google Store or Singtel.

Retail availability begins from September 2024 onwards. 

When it goes to retail, the phone will also be sold online and in-store at Singtel and SprintCass.
