Google has opened access to Gemini Nano, making its software development kit (SDK) available to third-party app developers.

As announced on the Android Developers Blog at the start of October 2024, Gemini Nano is open to all Android app developers through AI Edge SDK via AICore.

This means third-party app developers can try out Gemini’s text-to-text AI prompts in their apps. The compatibility is temporarily available only to Pixel 9 series devices, but the blog post said that support for more device types and AI modalities will be added in the future.

"Modalities "refer to the different types of input that an AI can accept and respond to—the more complex the input, the more complicated the AI’s capabilities. Hence, a multimodal AI that simultaneously parses text, images, documents, emails, calendar listings, and more would require immense computational power and speed.

For the average phone user, the freedom of adding Gemini to an app means app users can expect Gemini-assisted features without being tied to a specific phone vendor or brand.

For now, the Android Developer team recommends the following text-only AI uses in third-party apps:

  • Rephrasing, where tonality and formality can be rewritten to be more casual or formal.
  • Smart Reply, where the AI looks at the most recent messages to suggest a likely response.
  • Proofreading, for spelling and grammatical errors in texting.
  • Summarisation, where the AI helps condense key points in long documents, and present the information in a paragraph or as bullet points.

The team also added that this version of Gemini Nano is a substantial improvement in quality over its previous model.

Gemini is available as a standalone Android app that can be downloaded. It's also built directly into some Google-made apps.

Detailed instructions on accessing and using the SDK for app development can be found on the announcement page here.
