Google announced today that it has completed its acquisition of HTC's design team for US$1.1 billion (~S$1.44 billion), acquiring about 2,000 engineers, designers, and support staff in the deal.

The new employees won't have to relocate as Google already has extensive operations in Taiwan, with Google Senior VP, Rick Osterloh, confirming that "Taipei will now become the largest Google engineering site in APAC."

The move continues Google's expanded efforts to build its own hardware. Both the first and second generation Pixel phones were designed by HTC under Google's direction, but having its own army of hardware designers will now give Google tighter control on the entire design process.
