First BlackBerry QNX Phone Expected in Q1 2012
The first QNX-powered BlackBerry smartphone is expected to be released in Q1 2012. However, it seems that it will only run on a single-core processor.
Research in Motion (RIM) is expected to unveil the first QNX-powered BlackBerry smartphone, codenamed BlackBerry Colt, in Q1 2012.
According to BGR, the BlackBerry Colt will be running on a single-core processor instead of a multi-core processor. While internal testing has begun, it is possible that RIM may change to a faster and more powerful processor in the final retail version.
RIM currently faces hurdles in rewriting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) code to support the new QNX operating system (OS) and the BlackBerry Colt may be launched without the support for current BES versions. RIM has included Microsoft ActiveSync in the BlackBerry Colt so that consumers can use Microsoft Exchange email.
We last saw the QNX OS in action during our and it certainly has the potential to put BlackBerry back in the game. It remains to be seen if consumers will upgrade to the recently announced BlackBerry 7 OS phones or wait for the BlackBerry Colt.
