Firefox OS Powered Handsets Slated for Early 2013

Firefox OS powered devices are slated for a commercial launch in Brazil in early 2013. The Firefox OS is based on Mozilla's "Boot to Gecko" project (BCG) that was showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2012 recently.

The first Firefox OS-powered devices will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and are expected to be made available in Brazil through Telefonica's commercial brand, Vivo.
This initiative by the Mozilla organization has also garnered support from leading operators that include Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia and Telenor. Hardware manufacturers TCL Communication Technology and ZTE have announced plans to manufacture the first devices to feature the new Firefox OS.
Mozilla's mobile operating system is entirely open source and is based on HTML5. This new mobile OS has enabled HTML5 applications to access the underlying capabilities of a phone, previously exclusive only to native applications. Firefox OS will showcase a new phone architecture where every phone feature is an HTML5 application.
Mozilla entry into the smartphone arena is skewed towards entry-level devices that will feature applications that are built with standardized Web APIs. This is a step towards providing user experience that is truly agnostic of device and operating system.
