Carl Pei, who founded OnePlus and subsequently left to start up Nothing, was said to be demoing his smartphone prototype at MWC 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.
According to TechCrunch’s sources, Nothing has been working on a smartphone for over a year, with plans to announce its fruits of labour in April 2022. Carl Pei was seen showcasing a prototype phone device to industry peers at MWC 2022, with photographic evidence of the ex-OnePlus founder at one such meeting.
Not much is known about the prototype other than its common design language with the Nothing Ear (1) true wireless earbuds (our review here). TechCrunch’s source stated that it contains “elements of transparency”, which is similar to the Ear (1) in appearance.
For those of us just tuning in, Nothing has ownership of Essential, a company founded by Android creator Andy Rubin. Essential previously launched one Android phone, and had to shutter after it wasn’t able to find ways to ship another.
Notably, the Android phone market has been nothing short of competitive and oversaturated since the beginning, so the new Nothing smartphone prototype may prove to shake up the current stranglehold between Apple, Xiaomi, and Samsung.
