Apple's new iPhones come with several new features and upgrades such as the 7000 series aluminium, 3D Touch display, a new taptic engine, 2GB RAM and new camera modules. How much do these new components cost Apple?

According to analysts from Merrill Lynch, these components are estimated to cost Apple about US$234. In comparison, the iPhone 6 was estimated to cost around US$200. The bulk of the cost comes from the semiconductors which include US$36 for the cellular radios and US$25 for the A9 processor. Here's the cost breakdown for the other components:

  • US$22 for the various sensors such as fingerprint and NFC
  • US$20 for 64GB of flash memory
  • US$73 for other core components such as the display, camera modules and battery
  • US$33 for other components such as the case

Although the 64GB iPhone 6s costs S$1,218, it doesn't mean that Apple makes a profit of S$891 (based on currency rates at time of publication) from each unit sold. There are other costs involved such as manufacturing, packaging and distribution.
