Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 is twice as tough as competitive glasses
Corning has unveiled its 4th-gen smartphone display glass, Gorilla Glass 4. The company says the new glass is at least two times as durable as other aluminosilicate glasses.

You probably have heard of something called Gorilla Glass, a type of toughened glass by U.S. company Corning. It’s used on many mobile devices, including the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and several Samsung Galaxy S and Note series devices. Last year, the company introduced Gorilla Glass 3, and it’s now following that up with Gorilla Glass 4.
According to Corning, after finding out that sharp contact is responsible for more than 70% of screen cracks, the company’s scientists went on to develop new test methods for their cover glass. With the new Gorilla Glass 4, Corning claims it’s twice as durable as the competition’s, and is able to survive up to 80% of the time if the device is dropped face-down on a rough surface from a height of 1m.
Product sampling and shipment for Gorilla Glass 4 are already under way with Corning’s customers, so it should start appearing on new devices starting end of the year or early next year.
