BOE’s OLED chipset shortage might affect iPhone OLED production
Like most places, the display manufacturer is facing chipset shortages. Unlike most places, it has to answer to iPhone’s OLED needs.

Chinese display manufacturer BOE currently faces OLED production problems due to an ongoing chipset shortage affecting supply chains around the world. This hiccup may pose supply challenges to its clients, namely, iPhones.
According to Korean tech publication TheElec, BOE expects to lower OLED panel unit production volumes from three million units to two million next month, due to supply issues.
The firm procures display driver integrated circuits from LX Semicon, a chip-production foundry. However, the foundries are producing fewer chips than planned, which in turn affects BOE’s ability to produce sufficient OLED panels and fulfill its orders.
Apple ordered 10 million units of OLED panels from BOE, which needs to be fulfilled by H1 2022. It’s likely that these parts are meant for its upcoming 2022 iPhone release, which typically happens in H2 2022.
