Will BlackBerry ever make an Android phone? There is a likelihood of that happening in the near future based on BlackBerry CEO's latest comments.
During an interview with CNBC, BlackBerry CEO John Chen revealed that he does not rule out the possibility of building an Android phone if he managed to make it secure.
“We only build secure phones and BlackBerry is the most secure phone so, if I can find a way to secure the Android phone, I will also build that.” – BlackBerry CEO John Chen
Chen's remarks came at an interesting point; his company just reported a quarterly loss which saw revenue decreased from US$966 million a year ago to US$658 million today. Its strategy of focusing on devices with hardware keyboards is clearly not paying off and building an Android phone could save the company from further financial loss.
The Google Android platform may be plagued with malware and privacy concerns, but one company has so far dodged these issues and delivered a security-orientated smartphone which is based on Android. Known as the Blackphone, the phone enables you to make or receive secure phone calls, exchange secure texts, exchange and store secure files, have secure video chats and browse the Internet privately.
Given BlackBerry's reputation as the industry's leading secure mobile platform, we reckon that Chen and his team might be able to patch up the vulnerabilities and build a BlackBerry powered by Android.
