Apple is likely to reveal an upgraded version of ARKit, its augmented reality framework for iOS at WWDC 2018 next week which supports a two-player system.

According to Reuters' sources, the ARKit 2.0 will bring tools to allow two iPhone users to share AR while restricting the amount of personal data sent to its servers.

This is different from Google's approach which requires scans of the user's environment to be sent to, and stored in, the cloud. While Google states that the raw mapping data will be deleted after 7 days, Apple's approach will avoid storing any raw mapping scans of the user's surrounding in the cloud due to privacy concerns.

It is not known at the moment whether Apple will eventually expand the two-player system to support more players, but a person involved in Google's AR efforts claims that it would be a technical challenge; it is harder to handle three or more players simultaneously if the player who started the game drops out.
