Apple's A10X is the first 10nm TSMC chip to appear in a consumer device
TechInsights has confirmed that Apple's A10X is the first 10nm chip built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

As Apple does not reveal a lot on the A10X chipset, the curious folks at TechInsights decided to dig into the chipset and learn more about it.
TechInsights stated that the A10X is the first 10nm chipset built by TSMC, making the iPad Pro 10.5 and the second-gen iPad Pro 12.9-inch the first consumer devices to be powered by a 10nm TSMC chipset.
The A10X is also the smallest iPad chipset to date at 96.4 mm2; the 16nm A9X and 20nm A8X chipsets have a die size of 143.9 mm2 and 128 mm2 respectively. Compared to the A10 found in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the A10X is 24% smaller.
Apple's use of a new process node for the iPad is a strange move as the iPhone chipsets usually lead the charge. Having said that, it would be interesting to see how the upcoming A11 chipset - also made by TSMC - for the new iPhone models will fare against the A10X.
