Apple will still rely on Qualcomm for 5G modems for next year's iPhones

Looks like we'll have to wait longer for Apple's custom 5G modems.

Back in 2019, Apple  with the hopes of developing its own 5G modem. However, it seems like its custom 5G modems are not ready for action.

During Qualcomm's recent earnings call, its CFO Akash Palkhiwala said that they expect to "have the vast majority of share of 5G modems for the 2023 iPhone launch."

This corroborates with what Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in June, which was that Qualcomm would remain Apple's exclusive supplier for 5G modems for next year's iPhones.

Bloomberg reported back in July that Apple's modem prototypes have been plagued by heat issues, with analyst Mark Gurman writing that "the company has been struggling with its modem prototypes overheating over the past year or so."

Given the fact that Qualcomm is only expecting “minimal contribution from Apple product revenues in fiscal 25" means Apple's own modems might only start appearing in 2025 iPhones.
