Following reports that third-party apps are limited to 60Hz animations on the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple has stepped in to clarify on the matter.

In a statement to MacRumours, Apple says all third-party apps can take full advantage of the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates. However, developers need to add an entry to their app's plist to declare that they use higher frame rates. Apple will provide documentation on the required plist entry to developers soon.

By default, standard UI animations in all third-party apps can toggle between higher and lower frame rates on the ProMotion display. The plisty entry is only for apps that will benefit from higher refresh rates so that battery life on the Pro models are optimised.

Apple added that it will be issuing a software update to fix a bug that is affecting animations built using Core Animation.
