Apple said to be in discussions with Chinese supplier for flexible OLED displays
Bloomberg reports that China's BOE Technology Group Co could be the first known future supplier of display screens to Apple outside of South Korea and Japan.
While Apple has reportedly signed two massive deals with Samsung to secure 160 million OLED panels for this year's iPhone, it is also said to be searching for additional suppliers. One potential supplier could be China's BOE Technology Group Co according to Bloomberg.
Sources told Bloomberg that Apple has been testing AMOLED screens from BOE for several months, but hasn't made up its mind on whether to include the Beijing-based firm to its list of suppliers. BOE, which is known for making computer and TV displays, is rumored to be spending US$14.5 billion to build two AMOLED plants.
As talks between the two companies are still at an early stage, it is unlikely that BOE will be supplying AMOLED panels for the iPhone this year. BOE should be joining a list of other display suppliers to produce these panels next year. If BOE is successfully picked by Apple, it will be the first known future supplier outside of Japan and South Korea to produce display panels for the iPhone maker.
