Apple is said to have restarted discussions with OpenAI on a potential deal to power some generative AI features on the next iPhone.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg claimed that Apple and Google are in “active negotiations” to license Gemini while nothing emerged from the discussion with OpenAI. Another report last month suggests that Apple is also in talks with Baidu to use its AI models for the iPhone (since Google has little to no presence in China).

Bloomberg’s latest report states that Apple wants to use OpenAI to power its AI-based chatbot in iOS 18. It is not known at this moment whether the AI-based chatbot will exist alongside Siri and enhance it or replace it totally.

Apple is also said to be testing an internal chatbot and working on an enhanced Siri with generative AI. Therefore, the latter scenario is unlikely to happen.

With Apple reportedly holding or having held talks with at least three companies, there's still the possibility that Apple could use an entirely different generative AI model to power AI features on the iPhone to keep all AI processes on-device – something that we know the company is very keen to do as it keeps users' data private.
