Apple's shift of iPhone production to India is not as smooth sailing as it had expected.
The Financial Times reports that Apple is experiencing many problems as it scales up iPhone production in India. Apparently, only one in every two components from the production line of Apple supplier Tata is able to pass Apple's quality standards to be sent for assembly at Foxconn.
Former Apple engineers also told the Financial Times that operations in India are not running at the same pace as those in China. While Chinese suppliers go all out to win iPhone orders and complete work ahead of schedule, there seems to be a lack of urgency for suppliers in India.
Four sources familiar with the matter say Apple has dispatched product designers and engineers to India to train the local workforce and establish production operations. This is part of the company's long-term strategy to improve manufacturing operations in India.
India is emerging as the next major manufacturing hub for Apple as it diversifies the supply chain away from China. Analysts estimate a quarter of iPhone production would be moved to India by 2025. Bloomberg claims iPhone exports from India to Europe and the Middle East are expected to hit $2.5 billion through March this year. Apple recently added a second iPhone 14 supplier in India and aims to triple iPhone production in India by next year.
