Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are heavier because of the 3D Touch display

Apple's new 3D Touch technology may bring new ways of interacting with the display, but it is the main factor contributing to the increased heft of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

If you haven't realised by now, the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are heavier than their predecessors despite having the same display size and design. What contributed to the extra weight on the new iPhones? The 3D Touch display.

Apparently, the new display assembly of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus weigh twice as much as the one used in the iPhone 6/6 Plus. Based on the figures from the official environmental documents for the new iPhones, the display assembly of the iPhone 6s weighs 29g which is more than double the 12g display assembly of the iPhone 6. To sum it up, here are the weights for the iPhones:

  • iPhone 6 - 129g
  • iPhone 6 Plus - 172g
  • iPhone 6s - 143g
  • iPhone 6s Plus - 192g

Considering the amount of advanced engineering (capacitive sensors integrated into the backlight of the display) and technologies (all-new taptic engine) packed in the 3D Touch display, it is not surprising that there will be a significant weight gain for the iPhone 6s/6s Plus. This corroborates with a report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple could not unveil a thinner iPhone this year due to the technical limitations of current glass-to-glass solutions.
