The rumoured iPhone 17 Slim could be much thinner than expected
Noted Apple analyst Kuo says we are underestimating Apple’s engineering prowess.

Apple is rumoured to be launching a new ultra-slim iPhone later this year. This new super slim model will reportedly replace the “Plus” model, which hasn’t been selling well.
Despite recent rumours that Apple is facing difficulties getting the phone to be as thin as it wants, noted Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, thinks we are underestimating Apple’s engineering prowess.
According to Kuo, the thinnest part of the rumoured ultra-thin iPhone will be “around 5.5mm”. It’s unclear what he means by the thinnest part, but it’s reasonable to assume that the phone’s camera bump will make it thicker. To give this figure some context, consider that the thinnest iPhone to date is the iPhone 6, which measures 6.9mm.
To keep its thickness down, the slim iPhone is expected to only have a single camera. It's unclear what kind of battery it will have. Word on the street is that the battery is the biggest headache for Apple because it needs to balance battery life, cost, and thickness.
Kuo further reiterates that the phone will be too thin to have a SIM card tray, which means it will only work with eSIMs, which could be problematic for countries that still rely on physical SIM cards.
In his report, Kuo also states that he believes this new ultra-thin iPhone will outsell the Plus model it will be replacing. However, because it’s likely to be quite pricey, he doesn’t think it will boost overall iPhone sales much, if at all.
Apple is expected to unveil the ultra-slim iPhone alongside the other iPhones later this year in September.
