The premium price tag of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max apparently did not deter consumers worldwide from buying it.

According to Omdia's Smartphone Model Market Tracker 2Q23, the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is the most shipped smartphone worldwide in the first half of the year with a total of 26.5 million units. Rounding up the top five are the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and Samsung Galaxy A14.

Here's how many units each of these phones shipped:

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max - 26.5 million
  • iPhone 14 Pro - 21.0 million
  • iPhone 14 - 16.5 million
  • iPhone 13 - 15.5 million
  • Galaxy A 14 - 12.4 million

Compared to last year's top shipped model (which was the Apple iPhone 14), shipments of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max declined by 7.2 million units. But when comparing the same lineup (Pro Max model), the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max shipped 3.5 million units more.

What's also interesting is that the top 10 most shipped phones are dominated by just two brands: Apple and Samsung

In line with other reports, Omdia says the global smartphone market is shrinking due to economic recession and a growing market for used smartphones. The research firm expects global smartphone shipments to continue declining due to "the slump in the mid- to low-end market".

Apple will still fare better than the rest due to its premium branding. Omdia estimates shipments of the Pro models to increase steadily due to "solid demand for premium models". However, iPhone shipments this year are expected to be similar to last year or may even drop due to weaker demand for the non-Pro models.
