You can finally be in control of your homescreen.

You can finally be in control of your homescreen.

In the latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that there will be added customisability features to the home screen.

Gurman says these features will be announced as part of iOS 18 and will be revealed during this year's WWDC, which is happening from 10 June to 14 June.

According to Gurman, the first of two features will see users have the ability to change their app icons to different colours. Although this can be achieved now by using the Shortcuts app to customise app icons, there are drawbacks to this method.

To start, each time you launch the Shortcut application, a banner will appear initiating the Shortcut and this can be an eyesore to some. More importantly, it is tedious and time-consuming to set up a Shortcut for every single application on your device that you wish to change the colour.

The second feature will finally let users put app icons wherever they like instead of in a fixed arrangement. Though it wasn't explicitly mentioned, perhaps Apple will also allow you to place app widgets wherever you want on the home screen.

It's important to note that these reported features are still rumours, and Apple has not officially confirmed any details about iOS 18. Regardless, the potential addition of  home screen customisation options in iOS 18 will be a welcome addition for many users, who have been asking for more control over the looks of their home screens. It's a small, but meaningful step for customisability on Apple devices.
