Apple's first foldable may not be a flip phone despite an earlier rumour suggesting so. Earlier this year, The Information claimed that Apple was working on at least two "active prototypes" that have a clamshell folding mechanism similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.
However, Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), shared on X that Apple is likely to jump on the foldable bandwagon with a Samsung Galaxy Fold-like device – one that resembles the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6.
Furthermore, Young predicts that foldable phone display orders will likely continue to decline "in four of the next five quarters" until the arrival of Apple's first foldable device.
He believes "any improvement in form factor, functionality, use cases, durability, etc" could revive the foldable market in 2026. Growth is projected to be at over 30% for the year, followed by 20% in 2027 and 2028.
For 2025, Young says the foldable phone display market will drop by 4% with demand stalling at around 22 million units. Orders for the foldable phone display dropped for the first time in Q3 2024.
