Apple has extended its 5G modem contract deal with Qualcomm.

CNBC reports that Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon revealed in a call with analysts that its patent licensing agreement with Apple has been extended through March 2027.

Both companies announced a renewal of the modem supply agreement in September last year, which saw an extension through 2026 with Qualcomm supplying 5G modems to Apple.

However, a Bloomberg report in November 2023 claims that Apple is likely to miss its target of shipping a 5G modem by spring 2025. The delay is reportedly due to development issues of the 5G modem such as lack of mmWave support and frequent breakdowns.

Apple's in-house development of the 5G modem has been described as "another key strategic transition" and a long-term strategic investment by senior vice president of hardware technologies Johny Srouji. Given this new extension, it's fair to say that this transition seems to take a bit longer than the company had initially expected.
