Sony struggling to meet camera demand suggests entire iPhone 15 lineup might have 48MP cameras

48-megapixel is here to stay.

Now that WWDC 2023 is over, all attention is now turned over to new iPhones which are expected to be unveiled sometime in September later this year.

And the latest rumour regarding them is that the entire iPhone 15 lineup this year will feature 48-megapixel cameras.

To recap, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max both featured 48-megapixel main cameras while the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus stuck with 12-megapixel cameras.

The rumour stems from Sony reaching out to TSMC to help with the production of certain components for its camera units, like colour filter films.

According to supply chain insiders, Sony's own production capacity is said to be "tight" and the company is looking to cooperate with TSMC to meet demand for its 48-megapixel cameras.

Sony's new camera units are said to be more complicated to manufacture because it stacks photodiodes and amplifier circuits. The upside is that these cameras have better sensitivity and better signal-to-noise ratios.
