The reduction in iPhone 16 orders will impact Q4 2024 and Q1 2025.

The "massive upgrade cycle" for the Apple iPhone 16 may not have materialised after all.

Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple has cut the iPhone 16 orders by about 10 million units through Q1 2025. Kuo also revised the iPhone 16 shipment numbers for the year from 88 million units to 84 million units.

Kuo attributes the cut to weak demand for the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. While this year's non-Pro models are among the strongest we've seen in years, it seems that consumers are opting for the Pro models.

It's hard to know what to make of this. On the one hand, lukewarm reception to the standard iPhone models is a problem that Apple has been trying to tackle for years, and it seems that they are no closer to finding a solution.

On the other hand, the strong demand for the Pro models is still good news for Apple as the profit margins are said to be higher for those phones.

Apple's quarterly earnings next week will probably provide some insights into the sales of the iPhone 16 lineup and a forecast for the holiday quarter.
