Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Source Code is Officially Released

Google has officially released the source code for the long-awaited Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich. While this may be good news to developers and companies producing Android phones, the tangible benefits for consumers may take a little longer. The source code for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is now available for developers to download via the Android Open Source Project.

The move is a major step in boosting Google's reputation as an open-source company. Earlier this year, Google was widely criticized for not releasing the Android 3.0 Honeycomb source code to developers, in the hopes of streamlining the user experience across a wide variety of Android tablets with minimal changes to its user interface

With the Android 4.0 source code made available, developers can optimize their apps for the Ice Cream Sandwich variant. Meanwhile, companies such as HTC and Motorola have also announced specific devices that will receive the update in the near future.

But all this will take time, and for those of you who can't wait to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, we're sure the large Android hacking community will soon make unofficial versions of Ice Cream Sandwich available.
