The first images of Apple's rumored 4-inch iPhone 6C model surfaced on the Internet a few days ago.

According to PhoneArena, mobile parts reseller Future Supplier managed to obtain the plastic rear cover of the alleged iPhone 6C. While the rear shell may look like that of the iPhone 5C, Future Supplier pointed out some notable differences which suggest that we are indeed looking at a new model.

The rear shell of the iPhone 6C sports an oval-shaped flash hole that is similar to the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5C currently has a round flash hole. In addition, the rear shell of the iPhone 6C has two rows of speaker holes at the bottom while the iPhone 5C only has one.

So far, two reports have claimed that Apple is working on a new 4-inch model this year. Industry sources told DigiTimes that consumers can expect three new iPhone models - the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and a iPhone 6C - in the second half of the year. An analyst also said that a mini version of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be released.

In Apple's fiscal 2013 fourth quarter earnings call, Tim Cook reiterated that the iPhone 5C was never meant to be an entry-level model. Instead, the iPhone 5C is a mid-tier device. If Apple follows this product strategy, it is likely that the iPhone 6C occupies the mid-tier segment while the iPhone 5S is positioned as the entry-level model.
