Samsung may introduce an in-house GPU with the Galaxy S28

The custom GPU will likely make its debut in the Exynos 2800 chipset.

Samsung’s partnership with AMD has seen its high-end Exynos chips equipped with GPUs based on AMD’s graphics architecture. However, that arrangement could change in 2028, according to a report from Korean news outlet Hankyung.

Citing sources within the semiconductor industry, Hankyung claims Samsung plans to develop a custom, in-house GPU for the Exynos 2800. Beyond smartphones, Samsung is also said to be planning to use the GPU in smart glasses, autonomous vehicles, and even humanoid robots.

While Samsung has a multi-year agreement with AMD to bring Radeon Graphics to future Exynos chipsets, the South Korean company is supposedly of the notion that it cannot rely on general-purpose GPUs to fully realise its AI ambitions.

And to that end, Samsung is said to be exploring its own GPUs so that it can tightly integrate its software and hardware to deliver better performance and power efficiency. If this strategy sounds familiar, that’s because it’s exactly what Apple has been doing ever since it developed its own A-series chips for the iPhone.

Samsung reportedly paid $100 million in 2019 to license AMD’s graphics IP. The partnership was extended in 2023 to deliver console-level graphics quality on mobile devices.

If Hankyung’s report proves accurate, the Galaxy S28 series could be the first Samsung phones to feature an in-house GPU.
