Nothing has uploaded a teaser hinting at a major update for its smartphone operating system, called Nothing OS 4.0.

The video clip packs a lot of information within a minute, blazing through its revamped design, improved Quick Settings pull-down menu, and more. However, a few features that are unique to Nothing (and even Android phones) stood out:

First, there’s an Extra Dark Mode for higher display contrast, with the clip showing the option becoming available only after you have Dark Theme toggled on.

Second, there is an unnamed side button feature that lets the user flit between several shortcuts, but the way to trigger that feature is vague (Do you swipe? Or press the button?). While the shortcuts aren’t named in the video clip, it implies that they are the weather, your wirelessly connected devices, your photo gallery, and two others we couldn’t really interpret.

Third, and probably a feature that’s desperately needed as more people use consumer-facing, prompt-based AI tools, is that the new Nothing OS 4.0 has AI Usage that informs the user which AI tool is being used with which phone app. It also features an icon along the network bar for added visibility.

The transparency in AI use goes even further with built-in reports of AI usage, supposedly collated within its Settings app.

Nothing did not specify the exact date of Nothing OS 4.0’s launch, but it said that the open beta for the software is “coming soon”.
