In pictures: The iPhone SE

Don’t call it a comeback, it’s been here for years. Rocking its peers and putting others in fear.

Don’t call it a comeback, it’s been here for years: Apple's newest iPhone, the SE, melds old and new into something a little different. Outwardly, the SE comes in mostly the same design as the iPhone 5, which came out in 2012. The 4” inch screen is meant for people who still like smaller smartphones you can hold in one hand, and the more palatable price is meant to make upgrading easier on the wallet. But inwardly, the SE is no slouch, it’s powered by the same internals as last year’s iPhone 6s.

From the outside, the SE looks almost exactly like the iPhone 5, except for a few details. The first is that space grey has gotten greyer since 2012. Plus, unlike the original iPhone 5, you can get the new iPhone SE in rose gold (not shown here).

The easiest way to tell the iPhone SE from the iPhone 5/5s is to simply look at the back. ‘SE’ apparently stands for ‘Special Edition.’

Here’s another way to tell the iPhone SE apart from the older iPhone 5/5s; the SE’s chamfered edges are matte, not shiny. I know, I rolled my eyes when I first heard about it, but it’s quite obvious in person, and makes the SE look different - quieter, more refined almost. You may or may not like it, depending on your preference for bling.

Besides size and thickness, the biggest difference between the iPhone SE and iPhone 6’s outer design would be the round versus rectangular volume buttons, and the Power button on top instead of by the side of the phone.

The iPhone SE has duo-tone backs, with glass for the antennas, whereas the iPhone 6/6s’ back is one uniform color (except where the antenna lines break it up). There’s no camera bulge on the SE, though.

Just how much smaller is the iPhone SE compared to an iPhone 6s Plus? Well, one SE can almost fit inside one 6s Plus’ screen!
