Shortly after last Friday’s launch, photos and reports began circulating of scratches and scuffs on the iPhone 17 Pro display units in Apple Stores and other retailers. The marks were most noticeable on models with darker finishes, particularly on the back and edges of the camera bar. When contacted by 9to5Mac, Apple offered the following explanations:

They are not scratches

Apple determined that the imperfections are caused by worn MagSafe stands used in some of its retail stores. The company also clarified that these are not actual scratches, but rather “material transfer from the stand to the phone,” which can be removed with cleaning. To address this issue, Apple is replacing affected MagSafe stands in its stores.

Small abrasions can happen over time

The camera plateau edges share similar traits with the anodised aluminium casings of other Apple products such as the MacBooks. These edges have passed Apple’s stringent durability tests, but normal wear and tear – including minor abrasions – can still occur over time.
