Late last week, some users of X (formerly Twitter) may have seen a fabricated Google memo dated 1 August 2025, circulating on the social media platform.
The memo claimed that “Mainland Chinese users will have direct access” to a whole platter of previously denied Google Mobile Services, which include Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, and Google Play.
The memo is a fake, as clarified by Google and Huawei fansite Huawei Central.
Google’s official Weibo account addressed the hoax and declared that (translated):
“We noticed a screenshot about “Google China” that appeared on the Internet and social media platforms this afternoon. The information (in the screenshot) is not from Google, and not true.”
That, and the hoax could have been better made. Google is currently focused on building up its AI, Gemini, with the company doing its best to infuse Gemini into its many services (and even its customers’ devices). A quick check on Google’s official blog will show its recent mentions of “Gemini” far exceed some websites that dabble in astrology and daily horoscopes.
For Google to forget such a massive undertaking in an official announcement is extremely unlikely. Sincerely, salute.
