As reported by TechHive, Adobe will be stopping sales of boxed editions of its Creative Suite and Acrobat software. Instead, it’ll focus on offering the software through digital downloads and subscriptions.

In an email response to TechHive, Adobe said:

As Adobe continues to focus on delivering world-class innovation through Creative Cloud and digital fulfillment, we will be phasing out shrink-wrapped, boxed versions of Creative Suite and Acrobat products. Electronic downloads for Creative Suite and Acrobat products will continue to be available - as they are today - from both Adobe.com, as well as reseller and retail partners. We are in the process of notifying our channel partners and customers, as plans solidify in each region.

While no date on when this will take place was given by Adobe, two U.S.-based Adobe software resellers - Toolfarm and SoftwareMedia - had earlier this month pinpointed the date to be May 1. According to the email correspondence published by SoftwareMedia, it looks like between now and April 30, resellers are still able to order shrink-wrapped, boxed versions of the Creative Suite and Acrobat family. After the cut-off date, resellers can continue to sell the boxed editions until their stock is fully depleted. Of course, this date may not be the same across all regions. We'll update this news once we hear more about Adobe's plans in Singapore.

With the increasing availability (and affordability) of high-speed Internet, the growing consumer acceptance of buying software online, and the trend of laptops ditching their optical drives, this move from Adobe is hardly surprising. After all, Adobe has recently made a big push for the cloud by launching Creative Cloud, a membership-based service that provides users with unlimited access to download and install all Creative Suite desktop apps, plus Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Muse, and Adobe Edge tools and services. Another big company that has recently ditched DVDs in push for cloud subscriptions is Microsoft, with its new Office 365 subscription plans.
