YouTrip: 1 in 4 Singaporeans visited multiple destinations during recent June holidays

More shocking is Japan losing its dominance as a favourite holiday destination.

It’s time to kaypoh and learn what our Singaporean peers have been up to during the recent June 2025 school holidays.

According to YouTrip’s latest travel trends report, Singaporeans were excellent at maximising their rightful reprieve. 1 in 4 visited multiple travel destinations during the recent June holidays. Even YouTrip’s spokesperson was rather amazed by the travel habits displayed, per his quote:

“Amidst shifts in the global economic and heightened financial prudence, travellers are thinking how — not whether —they explore the world. Our findings reveal a clear trend where Singaporeans are prioritising destinations with stronger cost-to-value appeal, paired with more deliberate planning to maximise every dollar. Travel remains non-negotiable, but the playbook has evolved.”
Kelvin Lam, Chief Operating Officer of YouTrip.

A new favourite holiday destination that overtook Japan

More surprising are the shifts in travel preferences among YouTrip’s users. Over 80% chose to visit various places in Asia (and YouTrip believes it’s because of shorter flight times and lower airfares).

Across the board, the preferred holiday spots of Singaporeans remain similar.

China overtook Japan as the preferred destination during the June 2025 school holidays, with a 58% increase in visitor numbers. Big cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Chengdu were the most visited.

Across the board, the general travel preferences of Singaporean holidaymakers are similar to before. The top destinations for a vacation during the same break were Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

They go there, then they buy what and do what?

The spending patterns of Singaporean tourists show different “priorities” in each destination, although most of them appear to be familiar creature comforts for food and hobbies.

China is now the new favourite destination of YouTrip users, owing to its affordability and variety of experiences.

In China, the YouTrip spenders blew their money on Pop Mart blind boxes, Chagee milk tea, and the mega-hotpot chain Hai Di Lao.

Visitors to Thailand gave brisk business to Thong Smith and Chatramue. Meanwhile, those dropping in to Malaysia were not shy about their appreciation for Hai Kah Lang-Sentosa and Oriental Kopi.

Travellers who headed up to North Asia showed a greater preference for retail therapy, especially towards well-known brands with a strong international mindshare, despite their hyperlocality.

How long you travel has a lot to do with how near the destination is to Singapore, with far-flung places hitting 10 days.

For example, YouTrip visitors to South Korea were living it up at skincare brand Olive Young, while Japan goers hit up fast fashion giant GU. In China, it was Miniso. To balance out their spending, the same travellers to these places mainly ate at convenience stores, food halls, and fast food places.

YouTrip visitors to Western countries and territories displayed vastly different preferences during their leisure and downtime. For the US, UK, and Australia, it was national parks, musicals, and museums that drew the Singaporean tourist, while they opted for home-cooked meals instead of dining out to balance out their spending.

Age plays a part in what YouTrippers buy and spend on during holidays

Your preferred holiday type also depends on who you travel with and how far along you are in the game of Life.

YouTrip users aged 30 to 44, as well as those aged 45 to 59, were more likely to visit China, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. The multi-currency wallet brand posits that it’s a preference for cost-effective, quick holidays that are budget-friendly for larger families.

Travellers between 18 and 29 years old spent more on unique experiences, keepsakes, and visited a wider variety of destinations.

Those aged 60 and above were more likely to spend on cruises and slower-paced, all-inclusive tour packages, showing a preference for convenience and comfort. In particular, these YouTrippers tended to avoid going to South Korea and Japan.

Younger Singaporeans are capable of planning ahead

Conscious planning and budgeting cascades to changing currencies, well ahead of the trip. It’s also something to look forward to.

No YouTrip travel trends report is complete without a plug for its services. It found that 41% of its users were savvy enough to lock in favourable foreign currencies well ahead of their intended trips, especially among the younger MZ generation of users (Gen Z and Millennials).
