According to technology research and consulting firm Omdia (via Yonhap), Samsung has remained the top TV manufacturer in the first half of 2020.
In terms of value, Samsung tops the chart with its 31.3% share. OLED leader LG is second with 17%. Volume-wise, Samsung shipped 19.07 million units (20.7%) whereas LG moved 10.79 million units (11.7%).
Interestingly, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Omdia says Samsung’s market share in the first six months of 2020 was higher than the same period last year: 31.3% vs. 30%. Volume-wise, that's about 50,000 TVs more. This good result is attributed to strong QLED TV sales in the U.S. and Europe in the second quarter of the year.
While Samsung’s TV business seems to be doing well, the global TV market actually shrank during this period. According to Omdia, 91.87 million TVs were shipped during the first half of 2020, and that’s a 7.7% drop compared to the same period last year. The market value also dipped 17.8% year-on-year to US$39.7 billion.
