Panasonic and NVIDIA power the world's largest 4K video screen at 171 feet wide!

Racetrack operator of the famous Kentucky Derby horse racing wanted to bring the sport to the next level an invested in a massive sum to build the world's largest 4K video screen at 171 feet wide and 90 feet tall. Can you handle a screen that's larger than 2,200 46-inch TVs?

You would have read about 100-inch, 105-inch and 110-inch 4K TVs, but that's nothing compared to the US$12 million dollar gargantuan screen that's 171-foot wide and 90-foot tall - and it's capable of displaying 4K content!

Constructed at the legendary Churchill Down horse racing racetrack that hosts America's greatest race ever since 1875, the Kentucky Derby, the racetrack operators wanted to greatly improve the visibility and improve the experience for everyone in an impactful and profound manner. In essence, they wanted to bring the sport to the next level by investing in technology.

Affectionately known as the "Big Board", its 15,224-square foot area is larger than:-

  • 3 NBA basketball courts
  • 5 average sized US homes
  • 2,200 46-inch HD TVs
  • 320,000 Apple iPhone 5 screens

Seated 80 feet above ground, the screen's total height is 170 feet and because it's so huge, it can even be spotted from the next state!

The software and equipment that will control the Big Board will allow for multiple split-screen presentations of video, images, data and innovative live and recorded programming. Churchill Downs also will add full-1080i fixed and mobile HD cameras and a new audio system to deliver state-of-the-art picture and sound quality to its fans. The control system the powers all this is made by Vizrt, a long-time partner to Panasonic. Coincidentally, they are also a close partner with NVIDIA and to power the board's higher than 4K resolution (4,160 x 2,176 pixels to be exact) and handle multiple video streams, Vizrt uses NVIDIA's Quadro K5000 GPUs to keep it running.

So for a different and exciting 4K experience, you might want to plan a visit to Churchill Downs and attend a race.
