Apple plans to sell subscriptions to certain video services through TV app

This could be another strategy to boost Apple's service business.

Apple is planning to allow its customers to subscribe to certain video services directly through the Apple TV app.

According to Bloomberg, the move would simplify the current process where customers have to subscribe to different video services through their respective apps which are downloaded individually from the App Store. The Apple TV app will become the central location for customers to find, watch and buy content on the Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.

The direct video subscription feature is slated for release in 2019 and it would be one of its strategies to boost its service business via content subscriptions.

Apple reportedly invested US$1 billion in original video content and planned to launch up to 10 new shows. In January 2017, the WSJ reported that Apple had been in talks with veteran Hollywood producers for some months about buying rights to scripted TV shows. In February 2017, it hired former Amazon Fire TV chief to lead its Apple TV business. The following month, . In June 2017, two top Sony TV execs joined Apple to lead its video programming.
