Tokyo tops list of luxury hotels in APAC with the fastest Wi-Fi while Singapore lags behind

Ookla has just published a report detailing the Wi-Fi speeds of 20 luxury hotels across the top five meeting destinations in APAC (Asia-Pacific).
The five destinations are Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, and Bali. The list of luxury hotels includes Marina Bay Sands, The Peninsula Tokyo, Raffles Singapore, The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, and more.
According to the report, the hotel with the fastest Wi-Fi was The Peninsula Tokyo. It recorded a median download speed of 188.57Mbps. What’s remarkable is that it’s a whopping 66% faster than the second hotel on the list, Rosewood Hong Kong.

Only five out of the 20 hotels on the list managed median download speeds over 100Mbps. These hotels were categorised as “Top Performers” and they include hotels from Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Sydney. They are:
- The Peninsula Tokyo
- Rosewood Hong Kong
- InterContinental Hong Kong
- Anantara Siam Bangkok
- Shangri-La Hotel Sydney
Hotels that managed median download speeds between 50Mbps and 100Mbps were categorised as “Good Performers”. The fastest Singapore hotel fell in this category and it was Marina Bay Sands with a median download speed of 70.51Mbps.
The last group of hotels were categorised as “Lagging Performers” and there were seven hotels in this group. Sadly, three out of the seven are in Singapore, with the bottom two being Raffles Singapore and InterContinental Singapore. This shows that a strong national broadband infrastructure does not guarantee fast hotel Wi-Fi. Singapore often ranks amongst the countries with the fastest broadband speeds.
The report also found that there was a strong correlation between Wi-Fi standards and performance. The fastest hotels often employ the latest networking standards like Wi-Fi 6 and 5GHz networks, while the slowest hotels rely heavily on older standards like Wi-Fi 5 and 4, and slower 2.4GHz networks.
