Mark Zuckerberg gives away 99% of Facebook Shares, worth US$45B, for a better future

Inspired by the birth of his baby girl, Max, Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan have pledged 99% of their Facebook Shares, now worth US$45 billion, to the new Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Inspired by the birth of his baby girl, Max, Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan have pledged 99% of their Facebook Shares, now worth US$45 billion, to Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, an LLC to promote “human potential” and “equality” for the next generation.

In a post on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg wrote:

Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future. Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.

Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.

To that end, Zuckerberg and his wife have created the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, to pursue two overarching goals: advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. The Initiative’s initial areas of focus will be “personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”

The 31 year-old CEO says that he will remain Facebook’s CEO for many years to come, and in fact, Zuckerberg will still maintain control of his shares as he controls the Initiative.

Here’s Zuckerberg and Chan annoucing the new Initiative on video:

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));

A few weeks before Max’s birth, Priscilla and Mark took a morning to reflect and record their hopes for their daughter and all children of her generation.
